I Challenge Finland’s Finest to Guitar Hero Combat

Later this month, the 31st of October, I will be flying to Helsinki Finland to challenge Finland’s greatest Guitar Hero player (they’re figuring out who that is right now in a nationwide promotion). I’ll be showing up at Digiexpo, which is kind of like Finland’s E3.

Here’s the announcement video:

This video is probably one of the first videos on my YouTube channel that took longer than one day to film. Thanks to:

Sam Gorski – Camera, lab scientist
Brian Firenzi – The Random Finnish Guy (Check out his site: http://5secondfilms.com)
Alicia Martinez – Producer
Matt Arnold – Additional Camera, Lab scientist
Brandon Laatsch – My trainer
Niko Pueringer – Another one of my trainers

The basic gist of this one was to parody the Rocky IV montage (or rather, the 3rd Rocky IV montage). It seemed a natural fit – American former champion goes to Russia to challenge their champion. In that montage, Rocky uses natural means to beat rigid scientific methods. Here, I wanted to contrast old school gaming with brute force practice (which is what a lot of the pro rhythm game types tend to fall into). It’s all about cross training for me, and I hope the humor comes through.

The arcade was at the Redondo Beach pier – they had a whole slew of great classic arcade games ( the Pong machine didn’t really work, but was totally cool regardless). Special thanks to Ashley Halle, who tipped us off to the location. We were worried that someone might stop us, given that it’s LA and you can barely walk around with a camera without a permit, let alone use it, but we were able to film pretty openly and nobody gave two shits.

The majority of this one was shot on the Sony EX1, a camera I am liking more and more, and if it weren’t for the blasted lame 4:2:0 thing, would be a kickin’ sweet camera. Also if it weren’t such a bitch to hand hold. Super slow mo guitar smashing was on the Sony V1U, which has an option to do slow mo at the expense of resolution.

I plan on bringing along a little camera and continuing this little narrative in Finland, so that should be a lot of fun. It’s been a long ass time between videos due to how busy I was with other Actual Film Projects, so it’s nice to get something up onto the ol’ channel again.

A New Inspirational Background

I make myself desktop backgrounds to inspire myself sometimes.

Bear film poster

Here’s a movie poster for the film I was a producer on. This is what I’ve been working on for the past couple of months – a movie with a freakin’ grizzly bear in it:

Changing the look again

Once again I have changed the look of the place. The rad dude at Elegant Themes finally made one that was spartan enough for my taste, so that’s what I’m rockin’ now. Also I like the green.

YouTube videos have been at a standstill lately because of finishing up music and sound for Dark Island as well as being one of many producers on Bear. We settled on that title because it’s simple, and also because it’s bad ass, also because it’s about a bear. Truth in titles, I always say. Keep your eyes peeled for a poster soon.

Here’s what’s going on with life:
- Guitar Hero thing doesn’t end apparently. I’m performing at The Rockathon, a Rock Band charity event at the end of November, as well as showing up in Finland for Digiexpo to challenge that country’s best Guitar Hero player. Will do a YouTube announcement video for that one soon.

- I want to develop iPhone apps because my iPhone still pisses me off with the functionality it lacks. Rather than complain endlessly as I usually do, I figure I enter into the fray with this one. We have some good app ideas coming out soon.

- Going into preproduction for another movie, this one I’ll be directing.

Listen assholes

I am pretty cool with theater behavior, so long as the following rules are followed:

1. I can still hear the movie over you. That means I don’t give a shit if you’re talking, as long as it’s not louder than the movie. Brandon once sat in front of people whispering the entire time, but held off on saying anything. When the lights came back up, the guy behind him was blind, and someone was narrating the visual parts of the movie to him. I don’t need that kind of guilt riding me.

2. I can still see the movie. That means text all you want, but if your screen flares in my eyes, this is what I do – you get one chance to do it, because I don’t know maybe you’re doing a really important text to somebody at 1 am. After your one strike, I get to start reading your screen out loud, because as far as I can tell you’re showing it to me.

Come on, people

-fw

No director or writer older than me is a “big fan” of a video game.

I just saw Max Payne. What a piece of shit.

I hate it when people older than my generation say they were “big fans” of the game, or they’re big gamers. They all do – it’s like part of the marketing, part of the appeasement process for the gamer crowd, hoping they come out and put up some cash to see the big screen adaptation. Why, this movie was helmed by a fan! One of us!

Fuck that. You fucking bald face liars – none of you are “big fans” of the game. If you asked the Max Payne writer what his favorite mod was, or if you asked the Silent Hill director Christophe Gans what he thought of the dog ending in the second game, or if you asked the Hitman director Xavier Gens how he felt about the Japan levels in Hitman 2, they’d look at you like you were insane.

None of you people are big gamers, none of you are big fans. I guarantee you your understanding of any given game property goes about as deep as my understanding of quantum physics, which is to say, surface level and maybe having heard at one point about something to do with a cat.

Mark my words, the first decent video game adaptation will not come from anybody born before 1980.

Music Videos are Too Long

Hey marketing idiots at record labels!

Your music videos are too long.

1. You’re paying your directors less anyway.
2. Your audience is online. The online audience hates shit longer than 2:00

Make your content for your audience. Make 2:00 long cuts of songs.

Remember Radio Edits? Guess what – we need Online Edits now. Short and succinct, make your point and move on. Shots of the band playing? Gotta try harder than that.

I eagerly await the day the labels figure this out so I don’t have to waste time skipping around your shitty music videos.
